A Perthshire distillery restaurant was this week toasting the award of a second glittering Michelin star.
The Glenturret Lalique – established in 2021 in Scotland’s oldest working distillery – received the pre-eminent gastronomic accolade on Monday. It follows Restaurant Andrew Fairlie at Gleneagles, making the Crieff restaurant Scotland’s second two-starred Michelin restaurant.
Restaurant Andrew Fairlie retained its two-star status in the Michelin Guide Great Britain and Ireland 2024.
Scotland has no three-star Michelin restaurants, the guide’s highest rating.
The Glenturret Lalique chef Mark Donald has worked at Michelin two-star level for a number of years including at Restaurant Andrew Fairlie. Within seven months of the The Glenturret Lalique restaurant opening Mark had received his first Michelin star.
Of the latest Michelin award, he said: “It’s great for Scotland to get another Michelin two-star restaurant.
“The two stars have always been a big personal goal for me, having worked with other two-star chefs for a long part of my career.
“I used to work at Andrew Fairlie’s. I worked with Andrew in 2010. He was a great person to have known and to work with. It’s quite special that I’m the next person to get it after him.
“It’s great that people see another example of that calibre in Scotland.
“I feel that maybe we have been overlooked in Scotland. But we are becoming more of a gastronomic destination. It can only be a good thing for Scotland.”
Mark, from Glasgow, has also worked at Number One at The Balmoral Hotel, Edinburgh, and Noma in Copenhagen.
While The Glenturret Lalique is based in a whisky distillery Mark is keen to emphasise there are other influences at work.
