A popular food chain based in Scotland has been named "the worst in the world".
Last week, famed food critic Giles Coren wrote a review of a German Doner Kebab branch in London for The Times. The fast casual kebab chain, which specialises in German doner kebabs, is based in Scotland — with restaurants in cities such Edinburgh, Dundee, and Aberdeen.
German Doner Kebab is owned by Hero Brands - a firm created by Scots businessman Athif Sarwar - with the franchise's headquarters located in Glasgow. It currently operates more than 100 restaurants around the world.
In the scathing article, Coren referred to the kebab chain as "the worst possible restaurant you could ever imagine". While countless people across Scotland and beyond enjoy eating at German Doner Kebab every day, Coren described the food as "utterly hideous".
The writer ordered a chicken kebab, which he described as tasting like "factory vegetable oils" and "burnt roadkill". He also criticised the "slimy" consistency of his meal.
Elsewhere, Coren called out the restaurant's touchscreen ordering system for being impersonal. He also took issue with the "greasy" table he sat at, which left him feeling "disgusted".
The food critic's experience did not improve when he left to wash his hands in the restaurant's bathroom. After being unable to use the downstairs toilet due to it being out of order, he wrote that he was forced to climb "over piled sacks of onions and crates of tomatoes, slabs of Coke and Pepsi and a steepling 5ft tower of 10-litre tubs of Heinz Mayonnaise" to reach the "broken-doored disabled loo".
Coren also noted the restaurant's seemingly male-dominated clientele, writing: "Bar the lady at the drinks counter, it was only blokes in there. About 20 of them.
