EXCLUSIVE: Percy Jackson and the Olympians is firing on all cylinders for Disney+.
The premiere episode of the streamer’s original series, based on the books by Rick Riordan, has now amassed 26.2M views in its first three weeks on Disney+ and Hulu, according to the company. That’s double the viewership it managed in its first week.
Disney says that all five available episodes have surpassed 10M views in their first week on the platform, which seems to stay in line with the premiere’s initial viewership, though some decline is very usual and expected as the season progresses.
The company defines a view as hours viewed divided by runtime, similar to Netflix’s calculation.
Nielsen data for Percy Jackson and the Olympians could be available as early as Thursday, if the first two episodes manage to make it into the streaming top 10 in their first week on the service. Based on Disney’s reporting, it’s entirely possible the series will be on the charts. This could provide a bit more data about how the series is performing compared to other streaming originals, both on Disney+ and other platforms.
Based on Disney Hyperion’s best-selling book series by Rick Riordan, the well reviewed Percy Jackson and the Olympians stars Walker Scobell as Percy Jackson, Leah Sava Jeffries as Annabeth Chase and Aryan Simhadri as Grover Underwood.
Created by Riordan and Jonathan E. Steinberg, the series is executive produced by Steinberg and Dan Shotz alongside Rick Riordan, Rebecca Riordan, The Gotham Group’s Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Bert Salke, The Gotham Group’s Jeremy Bell and D.J. Percy Jackson And The Olympians has shared the reason behind a drastic character change from the novels to the series.Aryan Simhadri, who plays the character Grover Underwood in the Disney+ adaptation, has opened up about a key difference in the character’s presentation.Grover, a close friend of Percy’s, is a satyr, a Greek mythological creature that is half goat, half human. In the novel series by Rick Riordan, Grover’s primary diet consisted of furniture, aluminium and tin cans. However, according to The Direct, Simhadri has explained why this detail had to be altered for the series, which guest stars Lin-Manuel Miranda, Lance Reddick and Toby Stephens, among others.“Because you know, a lot of younger kids are going to be watching the show, and we don’t really want any eight-year-olds eating tin cans,” he explained.“So, yeah, we’ve maybe went a little light on eating sharp metal objects.”It is also mentioned several times in the novel series that Grover likes cheese enchiladas, so this trait was utilised in the adaptation.“Now [the diet’s] mostly consisting of enchiladas and banana bread, I think,” the actor explained. However, it seems the prop team did initially try to represent the character’s tin can preference, as Simhadri shared: “The props team came up with like a fondant tin can.

Charles Melton has had a good year; although saying farewell to Riverdale hit him hard, he went head-to-head with Natasha Lyonne for an episode of Poker Face and earned a Golden Globe nomination for his role in Todd Haynes’ May December. Sandwiched between Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore, the U.S.-born actor with Korean roots handled himself impeccably, playing the husband of Gracie (Moore), an older woman once sent to prison for molesting him as a minor. Melton brings a diffident grace to the part, which is crucial to the film’s unfolding when actress Elizabeth Berry (Portman) turns up.
