Pep Guardiola was unsure about his Manchester City tactics and team selection vs Brighton, with three positions causing him more food for thought than usual.
City scored two early goals that proved enough against a Brighton team set up to attack. The first half saw City in control, with Jeremy Doku giving James Milner a torrid time. Milner was replaced at half-time, with Brighton coming back into the contest and setting up a nervy ending with Ansu Fati's goal, but the Blues held on in an unexpectedly scrappy affair.
Guardiola had recalled Rodri to his starting line-up, with Bernardo Silva in midfield and Phil Foden coming inside from the wing and Doku causing trouble on the opposite wing. Those three players were not guaranteed to start, though, with Guardiola talking through his dilemmas before landing on his starting XI.

"Today I doubt a lot the line-up," Guardiola admitted. "I guessed a game with more transitions. Because both teams are man-to-man, more aggressive. You lose the ball more than usual. That provokes the transitions. I thought Phil and Jeremy with his pace could help.
"I thought a lot to put Mateo [Kovacic] and Matheus [Nunes] in that position. Because in the transitions Mateo and Matheus are really good, especially Matheus. But Bernardo for the way to press, he's so intuitive for that. It's so important for control. That is why I decide for that reason."
Doku drew praise from Guardiola after a fine display, especially in a fine run to assist City's first goal, and his threat prompted Milner to be replaced at half-time.
"Jeremy can play on right perfectly, maybe on the left he's not used [to]," Guardiola
