Oscars 2020: the complete list of nominees

The Writers Guild of America will hand out its top awards of the year in concurrent ceremonies on both the East and West Coasts on Saturday night.

Great movies always speak directly to the here and now regardless of their actual settings. Taken together, six of 2019’s best-picture nominees manage to survey still-potent American themes across the span of the past century and a half.

So, this year’s Oscar nominations have finally been revealed, and it’s safe to say that this year there have been controversies. Following BAFTA coming under fire for its apparent lack of representation in the main categories, the Academy Awards have also sparked outrage for the lack of any female directing nominees in the Best Director category, despite some strong output throughout the year.

The Oscars 2020 made a whole lot of noise when the star-studded nomination list was announced a few days back. Hosts and actors Issa Rae and John Cho did the honours this year as they introduced the talented nominees.

Issa Rae made her feelings clear at the lack of female nominees in the Best Director category as she announced the Oscars nominations on Monday January 13, pointedly offering her congratulations to "those men".

Hollywood outcry is growing over Oscar nominations in the best director category, which again ignored women filmmakers on Monday. Instead of nominating Greta Gerwig for “Little Women, Lulu Wang for “The Farewell,” or Marielle Heller for “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences opted to honor five male directors.

Issa Rae and John Cho announced the nominees for the 2020 Oscars this morning. After presenting the nominations for the Directing category, which consists entirely of male directors, Rae deadpanned, "Congratulations to those men." Her comments underscored the fact that no female directors are being acknowledged by this year's Oscars, despite there being plenty of choices in 2019.

Here's some news to fuel your fire this Monday morning: The Academy announced the and Beyoncé and all the talent she infused into The Lion King didn't make the cut. Oh, neither did (), Lupita Nyong'o (Us), Awkwafina (The Farewell), Zhao Shuzhen (The Farewell), Taron Egerton (Rocketman), the entire cast of Parasite, and a host of women directors including Greta Gerwig (Little Women), Lulu Wang (The Farewell), and Lorene Scafaria (Hustlers).

No nomination? No problem! 

The nominations for the 92nd Academy Awards are here -- and with them come a few surprises, including one glaring snub standing out in the musical categories.

Issa Rae did not shy away from calling out the snub given to female directors after she congratulated the male directors for their nominations for the respective films. The director's category did not have a single female director getting a nod.
