EXCLUSIVE: Once again, working under the Guild’s restrictive rules for inclusion among nominees for the WGA Awards for Best Original and Adapted Screenplays, several leading Oscar contending screenplays are AWOL on the official WGA ballot sent to eligible voting members this morning.
This is an annual occurence as, unlike other guild competitions including DGA, SAG, and PGA, the Writers Guild remain firm in their golden rule of eligibility for their top film honors: The movie must have been written under the WGA MBA or under a bona fide collective bargaining agreement of various international Writers Guild affiliated organizations
Thus such hot Oscar and BAFTA prospects as Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees Of Inisherin, Cannes Palme d’Or winner Ruben Ostlund’s Triangle Of Sadness, and many more did not even make the starting gate for WGA.
In the Original Screenplay category BAFTA just last week longlisted Banshees and Triangle Of Sadness, in addition to others nixed by WGA including Charlotte Wells’ highly critically acclaimed Aftersun, and Good Luck To You, Leo Grande.
Other prominent Original scripts deep sixed by WGA are Sundance sensations Nanny and Cha Cha Real Smooth; Sam Mendes’ personal Empire Of Light; Indian Best Picture contender RRR; and even Ol Parker’s hit George Clooney/Julia Roberts romcom Ticket To Paradise. Cannes triumphs Broker; Toki & Lokita; Close; Corsage; Holy Spider; and One Fine Morning also won’t have their screenplays considered by WGA members, in addition to acclaimed films like Argentina 1985, Joanna Hogg’s The Eternal Daughter; French Oscar entry Saint Omer; and praised indie films like The Inspection and B.J. Novak’s Focus Features film, Vengeance, the latter on my 10 Best list for 2022

It looks like it’s a forward march into Oscars season with the heavily accoladed war-drama All Quiet on the Western Front. Following its impressive 14 nomination count at the BAFTAs in almost all major categories, the film’s director Edward Berger and producer Malte Grunert now sound off to the tune of nine total Oscar nominations for: Best Picture, International Feature Film, Cinematography, Music (Original Score), Production Design and Make-up and Hairstyling.
Steven Spielberg’s autobiopic The Fabelmans notched seven Oscar nominations today including Best Picture and the filmmaker’s ninth directing nod.
With the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences having expanded its shortlist for the Best International Feature Film Oscar to 15 in recent years, it’s inevitable that some deserving titles miss the nominations cut. However, several of the perceived frontrunners are in the mix after today’s announcement, including Netflix’s All Quiet on the Western Front which has nine nominations in total, including Best Picture, and is yet another sign of how foreign-language films are crossing over into other main categories.
The Oscar nominations revealed Tuesday did not include any female directors, extending a trend that across this season’s awards landscape. It means the modest streak of women winning the Directing Oscar will end at two, after back-to-back wins the past two years with Jane Campion (The Power of the Dog) in 2022 and Chloé Zhao (Nomadland) in 2021.
At the start of awards season, Edward Berger’s All Quiet On The Western Front was a lock for International, but few could have foreseen how much further it would go. Alongside that nomination, the German film is now also in the running for Best Picture, having made the shortlist for Sound, Original Score, Adapted Screenplay, Makeup and Hairstyling, Production Design, Visual Effects, and Cinematography.
Award season continues unabated, with yet another round of high-profile nominations revealed, with this latest list causing entertainment media to jump for joy for some nods and also decry the lack of attention other talents and projects received. The nominees for the 2023 BAFTAs have been announced, and while there are many familiar titles and artists included, the British Academy Film Awards organization has favored one title above all others, and it is in stark contrast to what is receiving the same type of praise in the U.S.The remake of All Quiet on the Western Front leads the charge with 14 nominations, beating out the next most-nominated films, Everything Everywhere All at Once and The Banshees of Inisherin, by four nods.Interestingly, the picture has only managed one or two nominations at most of the major American film ceremonies, so its performance at the BAFTAs is already surprising. The 2023 BAFTAs will take place on February 19 and air on BBC networks. Here is the full list of nominees for the 2023 BAFTAsBest FilmBest DirectorBest Actor in a Leading RoleBest Actress in a Leading RoleBest Actor in a Supporting RoleBest Actress in a Supporting RoleBest Original ScreenplayBest Adapted ScreenplayBest Animated FilmBest DocumentaryBest Film Not in the English LanguageBest CastingBest CinematographyBest Costume DesignBest EditingBest Make Up & HairBest Original ScoreBest Production DesignBest SoundBest Special Visual EffectsOutstanding British FilmOutstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or ProducerBest British Short AnimationBest British Short FilmEE Rising Star Award

For the last three years, the winner of the International Oscar has pretty much been a given: First came Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite, then Thomas Vinterberg’s Another Round, and then Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s Drive My Car — all anointed by Cannes and eased to the finish line after prominent festival play in the usual cosmopolitan areas.
