Netflix has topped this year’s list of distributors nominated for BAFTA film awards for the fourth year running with 21 nominations overall.
The platform was propelled to the top slot by a record-equalling haul of 14 nominations for Edward Berger’s German-language anti-war drama All Quiet On The Western Front.
This is the highest number of BAFTA nominations for a Film Not In The English film since Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon in 2001, which was also nominated in 14 categories. The film went on to win the David Lean Award for Direction for Ang Lee, Best Film Not In The English Language, Costume and Music.
It also marks the highest number of BAFTA nominations for an individual feature, since the King’s Speech in 2011, which was also nominated in 14 categories. Prior to that, the record was held by Gandhi with 16 nominations in 1982.
The tally also makes All Quiet On The Western Netflix’s most BAFTA-nominated film since its first controversial triumph at the awards in 2019 with Roma.
The haul is in stark contrast to the movie’s performance at the Golden Globes where it clinched just one nomination in the Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language category and went home empty-handed.
However, the film is still a hotly tipped contender in the 2023 Academy Awards and it remains to be seen whether the BAFTA nomination success feeds through to the upcoming Oscar nomination announcements.
The platform was also nominated for Blonde (1), Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio (3), The Good Nurse (1), The Swimmers (1) and The Wonder (1).
Other distributors coming out on top in Thursday’s BAFTA nomination announcement were A24 and Searchlight with 14 nominations each.
A24 scored in 10 categories for Everything Everywhere All At Once and

It looks like it’s a forward march into Oscars season with the heavily accoladed war-drama All Quiet on the Western Front. Following its impressive 14 nomination count at the BAFTAs in almost all major categories, the film’s director Edward Berger and producer Malte Grunert now sound off to the tune of nine total Oscar nominations for: Best Picture, International Feature Film, Cinematography, Music (Original Score), Production Design and Make-up and Hairstyling.
With the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences having expanded its shortlist for the Best International Feature Film Oscar to 15 in recent years, it’s inevitable that some deserving titles miss the nominations cut. However, several of the perceived frontrunners are in the mix after today’s announcement, including Netflix’s All Quiet on the Western Front which has nine nominations in total, including Best Picture, and is yet another sign of how foreign-language films are crossing over into other main categories.
At the start of awards season, Edward Berger’s All Quiet On The Western Front was a lock for International, but few could have foreseen how much further it would go. Alongside that nomination, the German film is now also in the running for Best Picture, having made the shortlist for Sound, Original Score, Adapted Screenplay, Makeup and Hairstyling, Production Design, Visual Effects, and Cinematography.
FX has rounded out the series regular cast for its hourlong pilot The Answers, the network’s adaptation of Catherine Lacey’s novel. Lucy Hale (Pretty Little Liars) is set to star alongside Raul Esparza (Retreat), Krys Marshall (For All Mankind), Melanie Field ( A League Of Their Own), Pallavi Sharda (Wedding Season) and Kineta Kunutu (Citadel) in the project from Sorry for Your Loss creator Kit Steinkellner, Dopesick creator Danny Strong, Requiem for a Dream director Darren Aronofsky and 20th Television. They join previously announced male lead David Corenswet.
