DGA Awards Film Nominations: Steven Spielberg, Martin McDonagh, Todd Field, Joseph Kosinski & The Daniels Vying For Top Prize

The Oscar nomination announcement may have come and gone, but some guild award nominations have not. This morning the Writers Guild of America completed the reveal of the WGA Award nominations by announcing the 2023 film nominees.

The WGA has written out the film nominations for its 2023 Writers Guild Awards, spanning original, adapted and documentary screenplays. See the full list below.

You can’t really talk about the history of blockbuster filmmaking without mentioning Steven Spielberg. You could argue the summer blockbuster was created by his film, “Jaws,” decades ago.

Steven Spielberg’s autobiopic The Fabelmans notched seven Oscar nominations today including Best Picture and the filmmaker’s ninth directing nod.

The Oscar nominations revealed Tuesday did not include any female directors, extending a trend that across this season’s awards landscape. It means the modest streak of women winning the Directing Oscar will end at two, after back-to-back wins the past two years with Jane Campion (The Power of the Dog) in 2022 and Chloé Zhao (Nomadland) in 2021.

four times on four completely different movies: 2005’s thorny political thriller “Munich;” 2012’s historical biography “Lincoln;” 2021’s epic musical “West Side Story;” and most recently, 2022’s autobiographical “The Fabelmans,” the story of how Steven Spielberg became Steven Spielberg. Only one other screenwriter, David Koepp, has collaborated with the filmmaker as often (and they had a fifth project in pre-production that fell apart at the eleventh hour).

It’s not hyperbole to say Steven Spielberg is one of the greatest filmmakers to ever live. The director has won three Oscars and has been nominated for dozens more prestigious awards.

A24’s Everything Everywhere All at Once scored nine nominations and Focus Features’ Tár followed with seven to lead the way Thursday in film noms for the 14th annual Dorian Awards, bestowed by GALECA: The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics.

It is a blockbuster morning as far as the Producers Guild of America is concerned as it revealed film and TV nominations Thursday for its 34th annual PGA Awards.

Tom really didn’t want to make another Top Gun and [director Tony Scott’s suicide] made it even less likely. I’m sure for him, that’s probably another reason why he wouldn’t ever consider going back. But I pitched the idea of this story being a reconciliation between him and Rooster set against this mission that would take Rooster into this very dangerous situation, that they’d end up together across enemy lines, having to resolve their differences and work together to get back home. As soon as I pitched that idea, I could just see the wheels in Tom’s head start to turn and all of a sudden, he had a very emotional reason, a hook back into this character, and a reason to come back, because I think in his mind it was like a one in a million shot that we would be able to get it right. He kept saying, “Joe, we got to hit a bullet with a bullet.” And that was his line on this movie. And so, I certainly heard that in my head every day as we were making the film. I think everyone who worked on this film felt like the bar was very high because we all were fans of the original.

Paul Dano The Fabelmans star reveals the emotional connections he made in portraying a version of Steven Spielberg’s father

The Screen Actor’s Guild had their year-end say at sunrise and a few hours later, the Directors Guild of America revealed their own nominees for the 2023 DGA Awards. For the most prestigious honor, Theatrical Feature Film, the nominees are Todd Field (“TAR”), Joseph Kosinski (“Top Gun: Maverick”), Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (“Everything Everywhere All At Once”), Martin McDonagh (“The Banshees of Inisherin”) and Steven Spielberg (“The Fablemans”).

When Ke Huy Quan won his first Golden Globe on Tuesday night for his supporting turn in A24’s Everything Everywhere All at Once, he started off by paying tribute to his first boss — the director who cast him in the iconic role of Short Round in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.
