‘One Night in Miami,’ ‘Mulan’ and ‘Mank’ Among Costume Designers Guild Nominations

Producers of One Night in Miami, Promising Young Woman, and Borat: Subsequent Moviefilm spoke about how the COVID-19 pandemic impacted their films at a panel staged by the Producers Guild.

Amazon’s One Night in Miami picked up three Academy Award nominations Monday morning, with two of those nods going to actor and singer Leslie Odom Jr. Earning a best supporting actor nomination for his supporting turn as soul legend Sam Cooke, Odom also shares a best original song nomination with Sam Ashworth for the tune "Speak Now" — which makes Odom the first male performer to be nominated for both acting and songwriting.

Monday’s Oscar nominations announcement was a whirlwind for “One Night in Miami” writer Kemp Powers, who scored a Best Adapted Screenplay nod for the Amazon Studios drama. The only sore spot? Regina King, who made her directorial debut with the film adaptation of Powers’ play, was shut out of the Best Director category.“I think she’s one of the best directors in the world, I really do.

Kemp Powers debuted his original play One Night In Miami back in 2013. Eight years later and the scribe is deep into the Oscars race, receiving a best adapted screenplay nomination for a play he never envisioned for the big screen.

Leslie Odom Jr. became a two-time Oscar nominee today for his performance in One Night In Miami. For his role as legendary singer-songwriter Sam Cooke, the actor earned a nomination for Best Supporting actor as well as one for Best Original Song as the composer and performer of the film’s ending credits track, Speak Now.

History was made across the board with the 93rd Oscar nominations. Steven Yeun became the first Asian-American nominated for Best Actor.

The Producers Guild of America announced the pandemic delayed nominees for the 2021 PGA Awards and the “surprises” in the film category were not that surprising. Best Picture frontrunners “Nomadland,” “Minari” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7” all made the cut, along with other familiar titles.
