EXCLUSIVE: Netflix debuts the first track of Nyad score ahead of the film’s theatrical release. The film is scored by two-time Oscar-winning composer Alexandre Desplat (The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Shape of Water).
Nyad tells the incredible true story of world class athlete Diana Nyad, played by Annette Bening. At the age of 60, after a three-decade break from marathon swimming, Nyad set out to achieve her dream of swimming 110-miles across the open ocean from Cuba to Florida. With the help of her best friend and coach Bonnie Stoll (Jodie Foster), Nyad assembles a team of experts for a four-year journey to brave the treacherous waters filled with powerful currents and deadly sea creatures.
Although the dangerous journey itself is worthy of inspiration, Desplat instead chose to focus his score on the fearless woman who risked everything for her dream. “I try to avoid any over-the-top emotions or over-the-top danger, over-the-top fear, because that’s not the point,” he says. “The point is this woman trying to achieve her dream and that’s the center of everything. The key is she has no fear. We are afraid for her, but she doesn’t care, and that’s also something quite incredible, and that influenced the way I also wrote the music for the film.”
Nyad releases in theaters on 10/20, and will be available to stream on Netflix on 11/3. Desplat’s original soundtrack will be released by Netflix in November.
