Bloating can be painfully uncomfortable if not common, but there are reasons behind the condition you may not realise.
Whether it's from food or fizzy drinks, the cause of a tight and full stomach is often having a lot of gas in your gut. Some people may feel bloated on their period and even during hot weather.
According to nutritionist Dr Pamela Mason from the Tea Advisory Panel, anxiety and stress can be behind bloating as it "upsets the delicate balance of digestion".
She told The Mirror: "When stressed the body produces cortisol (one of the fight and flight hormones). Cortisol upsets the gut microbial balance, which can lead to poor digestion of food components.
"This can cause bloating, which may be accompanied by 'gas' or farting due to faulty food fermentation in the gut. Cortisol also communicates the life or death (fight or flight) situation of stress to the brain. The brain then reduces or shuts down processes less essential for survival like digestion. Stress may therefore slow down digestion causing bloating, pain and indigestion."
What happens next is that you may feel "tightness, pressure, fullness and pain" and your stomach may feel swollen. The NHS advice for treating bloating includes regular exercise to improve your digestion, chewing with your mouth closed, and drinking plenty of water.
Dr Mason also recommends drinking tea to beat anxiety bloating, explaining: "Stay well hydrated. I would recommend drinking non-fizzy drinks such as black tea, which has plenty of health benefits, and water.
Tea contains compounds that are rich in antioxidant activity called flavonoids that Dr Mason says will improve bloating.
She continued: "Black tea, that's our much-loved cuppa with milk or without, is good for our gut
