Netflix Top 10: ‘Echoes’ Continues to Lead as ‘Devil in Ohio’ Debuts at No. 2

HBO Max, which just became part of Nielsen’s weekly U.S. streaming rankings a few weeks ago, had a coming-out party on the chart for August 22 to 28 thanks to House of the Dragon.

House of the Dragon” ranked at No. 6 on the Nielsen Streaming Top 10 chart during the Aug. 22-28 viewing window. That time period was the first full week of availability for the first episode of the “Game of Thrones” prequel on HBO Max, but also included a small portion of the streaming viewership for Episode 2, which debuted on HBO Sunday, Aug. 28 at 9 p.m. ET. Together, the first two episodes of “House of the Dragon” garnered 741 million minutes viewed that week, more than doubling the prior week’s Nielsen streaming numbers, which only counted up viewership for the first few hours that the “House of the Dragon” premiere was available on HBO Max. (Nielsen cuts off its count for the SVOD weekly rankings on Sunday evenings). But in just that short measurement of time, the series quickly raked in 327 million minutes watched on the streaming service.

Queen Elizabeth II’s Sept. 8 death sent viewers flocking to Netflix’s The Crown, with Season 1 of the Peter Morgan drama returning to the streamer’s Top 10 at #7 for the week of Sept. 5 – Sept. 11, which included the day the news of the Queen’s passing broke and the three days that followed. For the week of Sept. 12 – Sept. 18, which coincided with UK’s period of national mourning, The Crown‘s first season rose to #3 with 40.8M hours viewed, with Season 2 also reentering the Top 10 at #7 with 16.7M hours viewed.

BreAnna Bell “Cobra Kai” is still kicking at the top of Netflix’s Top 10 list following its Season 5 premiere on Sept. 9. During the Sept. 12-Sept. 18 viewing window, the show scored 95.6 million hours viewed –– which is still a high note despite its drop from the prior week’s astounding 107 million hours watched. Sliding in at No. 2 is Season 2 of “Fate: The Winx Saga.” The new installment debuted on the streaming service on Sept. 16, raking in 49 million hours watched in its first three days of availability. Season 1 of “The Crown” continued its reign on the list, moving up to the third spot with 40.8 million hours viewed, while Season 2 of the series entered the list with 16.7 million hours viewed.

“Cobra Kai” Season 5 has once again clinched the first spot in the Netflix Top 10 in the second week since its premiere, with 95.6 million hours viewed. The top 3 on the English TV list this week was rounded out by “Fate: The Winx Saga” Season 2, which debuted with nearly 49 million hours viewed, and “The Crown” Season 1, following closely behind with 40.8 million hours viewed after news of Queen Elizabeth II’s death.Other notable entries on the list included documentary series “Sins of Our Mother,” from director Skye Borgman, which debuted on the list with 24.4 million hours viewed, as well as “The Crown” Season 2, which marked its first entry on the list with 16.7 million hours viewed.

Joe Otterson TV Reporter Regé-Jean Page and Glen Powell will star in TV series about Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid for Amazon, Variety has confirmed with sources. The untitled series will be executive produced by The Russo Brothers under their AGBO production banner. Kaz and Ryan Firpo, who most recently worked on Marvel’s “The Eternals,” will write. The search is currently on for a showrunner. According to sources, deals for the series are not yet closed and discussions are ongoing. Exact plot details are being kept under wraps but it is known that Page will play Cassidy while Powell will play The Sundance Kid. Both actors will also serve as executive producers on the show in addition to starring. Mike Larocca, Angela Russo-Otstot, and Scott Nemes of AGBO will also executive.

The death of Queen Elizabeth II has sparked viewership of the first season of The Crown.

Jennifer Maas TV Business Writer The death of Queen Elizabeth II prompted the Claire Foy-led first season of “The Crown” to crack the Netflix Top 10 last week. Per Netflix, “HRH Queen Elizabeth II was in the hearts and minds of viewers” as Season 1 of the streamer’s Royal Family drama was watched for 17.6 million hours between Sept. 5-11. That put it in the No. 7 spot for English-language TV series. Meanwhile, the fifth season of “Cobra Kai” easily took the No. 1 slot on that list with 106 million hours viewed in the first three days post-Friday launch. In second place was limited series “Devil in Ohio,” which had 70.8 million hours viewed, followed by the first season of “The Imperfects” with 24.1 million.

BreAnna Bell “Stranger Things” has been dethroned from Nielsen’s No. 1 spot. During the Aug. 8-Aug. 14 viewing window, Netflix’s “The Sandman” was the show to finally overthrow “Stranger Things,” racking up 1.4 billion minutes watched. And after “Uncharted” took fifth place in three days of availability on Netflix last week, the Tom Holland-led film was viewed for 1.2 billion minutes in its first full week. “Stranger Things” was bumped to No. 3 on the chart with 1.1 billion minutes watched, ending a nearly three month run at No. 1 (with a brief intermission at No. 2 after the debut of “The Umbrella Academy Season 3).

The success of monster hits such as Squid Game, Netflix’s most popular series ever, as well as Money Heist, All of Us Are Dead, Elite and Lupin, has proven that there is no language barrier for non-English-language series to become global phenoms.

BreAnna Bell During the Aug. 1 – Aug. 7 viewing window, Disney’s “Lightyear” soared to the No. 3 place on the Nielsen streaming programs chart, raking in 1.3 billion minutes viewed after its premiere on Disney+. The “Toy Story” spinoff scored No. 1 on the movies list, leading Netflix’s “Uncharted,” which premiered on Aug. 5 to 1 billion minutes watched. “The Sandman” broke into Nielsen’s Top 10 streaming rankings following its Aug. 5 release date at No. 4. In its first three days of availability, the fantasy drama based on Neil Gaiman’s comic book series, recorded 1.02 billion minutes viewed. The show followed the platform’s traditional playbook and released 10 episodes on its original release date, as well as a surprise bonus episode two weeks later on Aug. 19.

Selome Hailu The Michelle Monaghan vehicle “Echoes” was the most-viewed title on Netflix during the Aug. 22-28 viewing window, its first full week of availability after premiering on Aug. 19. With 68.5 million hours watched, the limited series passed Neil Gaiman’s “The Sandman,” which was watched for 53.8 million hours in the same period and had held the No. 1 position on the English-language series chart for the three weeks prior. “Me Time,” the comedy film starring Kevin Hart and Mark Wahlberg, debuted as the second-most-watched title of the week and the No. 1 movie. Racking up 59.2 million hours watched in its first three days of availability on the streamer, “Me Time” follows Sonny (Hart) as he reconnects with his best friend Huck (Wahlberg) for a wild weekend while his wife (Regina Hall) and kids are away.

Angelique Jackson Netflix’s restructuring continues with the impending departure of one of the streamer’s top film executives, Tendo Nagenda. The veteran executive, who joined Netflix from Disney in 2018, shepherded such movies as “The Harder They Fall,” “Da 5 Bloods” and the upcoming “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” for the streamer. Variety can confirm that Nagenda’s last day in his role will be Sept. 1. “Tendo joined the company four years ago and helped to build out our studio film team, who delivered movies such as ‘The Harder They Fall,’ ‘Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery,’ ‘The Old Guard,’ ‘Da 5 Bloods’ and ‘Hustle,'” Scott Stuber, Netflix’s head of global films, said in a statement. “He was integral in our evolution from acquiring and licensing films to making movies ourselves. We wish him all the best for the future.”
