As awards season settles into its extended 2021 schedule the one organization there is no cure for, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, are ready for their spotlight. Yes, the Golden Globe Awards will reveal their nominees on Wednesday morning and, as usual, every studio, network, and streamer is quaking in their boots.

In 2021, the most strikingly diverse category at the Golden Globe Awards is best director. After a total of five female nominees over the past 77 years, this year women comprise the majority of the race: One Night in Miami’s Regina King, Nomadland’s Chloe Zhao and, in somewhat of a surprise, Promising Young Woman’s Emerald Fennell.

The Golden Globes last year was blasted for completely ignoring women in its Director category, and this year they made up for that with a record-breaking three of five nominees (Emerald Fennell, Chloé Zhao, Regina King), and on top of that it nominated Sia’s weird directorial debut Music for Best Picture – Musical/Comedy, but more on that curio below.

Let’s get the worst news regarding the Golden Globes nods out of the way. No, it wasn’t the fact that Sia’s “Music” earned two nominations or that Jared Leto cracked the Supporting Actor field for “The Little Things” (although more on that in a minute).

While the airing date will change from the first Sunday of the year to February 28th this year for the Golden Globes, due to the pandemic, many things like the awards to phenomenal films, the funniest hosts and much more has not.

Last year, Netflix became the first outlet to lead both the film and television nominations at the Golden Globes. The streamer did it again this year in an even more dominating fashion, earning a staggering 42 nominations across film and TV, half as all other distributors combined (83).

In one of the most confusing award announcements in recent memory, Sarah Jessica Parker and Taraji P. Henson had the honor (or is that horror?) of announcing the 2021 Golden Globes nominees bright and early on their zooms.
