Netflix Adds Classic Films By Martin Scorsese, Mel Brooks, Robert Altman & More Celebrating 50 Year Anniversaries In 2024

Today, it’s easy to put Martin Scorsese up there as one of the greatest American film directors of all time. However, according to one of his longest collaborators, that feeling is relatively new, as studios didn’t respect him as a living legend until the last decade or so.

When the Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian hosted Apple Original Films’ Killers of the Flower Moon for an event on Friday, director Martin Scorsese and star Lily Gladstone talked extensively about the development and production of the Oscar-nominated epic.

Leonardo DiCaprio was considered a favorite to receive a Best Actor nomination at the 2024 Oscars for his work in Killers of the Flower Moon, but he didn’t get one in the end.

Killers of the Flower Moon confirmed today, Martin Scorsese has become the living director with the most Oscar nominations.The Academy included the 81-year-old on their Best Director shortlist, giving him his tenth nomination in total, and overtaking Steven Spielberg’s nine.Scorsese’s nominations go back to 1980’s Raging Bull, but he has only won the prize once, for 2006’s The Departed. His other recent nominations include The Irishman, The Wolf of Wall Street and Hugo.

Leonardo DiCaprio has revealed that he recommended two films from animation studio, Studio Ghibli, for director Martin Scorsese to watch.Speaking with Letterboxd earlier this week, the two Hollywood stars, who recently collaborated on their sixth movie together, Killers Of The Flower Moon, opened up about DiCaprio’s recommendations, which were both created by Hayao Miyazaki.“I was asked what films I introduced to you, but considering you’ve seen every film ever made up until 1980, it’s pretty hard to say,” DiCaprio said to the director.“Other than maybe Spirited Away – Miyazaki’s films – and maybe Princess Monoke,” he continued.Scorsese responded: “It was Spirited Away you told me to watch,”The 2001 animated fantasy movie was a huge success, crossing more than $395million at the box office against a $19.2million budget, and winning the Oscar for Best Animated Feature at the 75th Academy Awards.The 1997 movie, Princess Monoke was also a critical and commercial success, and held Japan’s box office record for domestic films until the release of Spirited Away.

Pat Saperstein Deputy Editor Netflix is kicking off its Milestone Movies: The Anniversary collection with films that are turning 50 in 1974 — a group that happens to include some of the medium’s all-time classics. The anniversary titles will stream on the platform in the U.S., along with in-person special screenings starting in March at New York’s Paris Theater and L.A.’s Egyptian Theater in Hollywood and Bay Theater in Pacific Palisades.

Daniel Day-Lewis is stepping out to help honor his longtime friend and collaborator Martin Scorsese.

Jordan Moreau Retired actor Daniel Day-Lewis made a surprise appearance at Thursday night’s National Board of Review Awards gala to honor Martin Scorsese with the best director award. Scorsese and Day-Lewis previously worked together on 1993’s “The Age of Innocence” and 2002’s “Gangs of New York,” but if it were up to Scorsese that wouldn’t be their last collaboration. The legendary filmmaker teased that “maybe there’s time for one more” film together during his acceptance speech.

“We did two films together and it was one of the greatest experiences of my life. Maybe there’s time for one more?” said Martin Scorsese, turning to Daniel Day-Lewis after the actor lovingly introduced him at the National Board of Review awards gala.
