A murder investigation has been launched after a woman was found dead in a block of flats in Ashton-under-Lyne this morning (August 25). Soon after this was reported to the police a 51-year-old handed himself into a police station nearby, and has subsequently been arrested on suspicion of murder.
Residents living in the same block of flats described their confusion to the Manchester Evening News as they were asked to leave by officers around 9.30am this morning so investigations could be carried out. Officers were first called just before 9.15am about the death of a woman in a flat on Manchester Road, with forensic investigations carried out throughout the day.
Investigators carried out door-to-door enquiries into the evening while residents had to find somewhere else to stay for the night. One told the MEN : "We know as much as you do. They just came in the morning and said we had to leave, we have no idea what's going on."

Greater Manchester Police confirmed that after receiving the report of the death, a 51-year-old man handed himself in to Ashton police station, also on Manchester Road, and was arrested on suspicion of murder. He remains in custody and is being questioned by detectives from the Major Incident Team.
Officers added that the victim's family have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers. The identity of the victim has not been released at this stage.
GMP say they are 'keeping an open mind' while their investigations continue, but they are 'confident' that they are not looking for any other suspects than the arrested 51-year-old at this time. Detective Chief Inspector Liam Boden described the case as
