Manchester council's plans to cut costs is not going to plan with the town hall forecasting an overspend of nearly £9m this year. Most of this increase comes in the adult social care budget where demand has been higher than expected.
Demand for care homes in Manchester dropped during the pandemic and this trend was expected to continue after the Covid crisis. It comes after council officers spoke of a 'reluctance' for families to place loved ones in care homes.
Efforts have also been made to reduce demand for residential and nursing homes through a council programme which aims to support people living in their own homes for longer. This was expected to save the council millions.

However, demand for long-term care arrangements has been higher than expected this year, according to a report which will be presented to the council's executive committee on Wednesday (July 26). According to the report, this higher-than-expected demand is specifically for older people in residential and nursing care and care at home as well as in supported accommodation for people with learning disabilities and physical disabilities.
The report concludes that although 'strong progress' has been made in reducing demand, it is 'unlikely' that the planned savings of £5.5m will be delivered this year. This, together with overspends in other town hall departments, means the council may need to dip into its cash reserves.
