In 2012, the 44 year old discovered she had the BRCA2 mutation gene, which meant she had up to an 80% chance of developing breast cancer and an increased risk of developing ovarian cancer at an early age. She was “completely devastated” by the diagnosis and elected to have a double mastectomy, admitting she would have “done anything” to save her life.
The star then underwent a total hysterectomy – a surgical procedure to remove the womb – at the age of 35, which sent her body into an immediate menopause. “Going through the menopause was incredibly difficult, especially when it came to my energy levels,” she explained.
“But one thing I have learned is that keeping active helps with that. I felt like I had no get up and go, but eating properly and exercising has a great knock-on effect for the rest of my day.” Husband Hugh, also 44, and a fitness industry expert, couldn’t agree more. “The way I look at it is that exercise is the best form of free therapy out there,” he said.
“It helps people feel better and prioritise themselves and their self worth.” Michelle has also previously opened up about her struggles with menopause and the benefits exercise can have, "Exercise definitely does help. I went into surgical menopause nine years ago when I was in my thirties and it was very sudden. I wasn’t equipped for it at all.
