Former Rangers assistant Neil Banfield says Michael Beale's era was met by a wall of physicality every week - but he insists the Londoner had them on a road to glory.
The former coach took over from Giovanni van Bronckhorst in 2022 but lasted less than a year before getting his jotters in September in the aftermath of a 3-1 Premiership defeat at home against Aberdeen. Beale has since taken the head coach role at Sunderland but Banfield insists that Rangers success could have been carved out over the long haul.
Celtic were their litmus test and others raised their game to face the Light Blues, he claims, but there were building blocks for consistent achievement. He told the Christie Scanlon Podcast: "We used to go to games and every team it was their cup final. The first team you look for is your Celtic and Rangers games.
"It would be a full house, everyone would be excited. Players get a lift and all of a sudden they find 10 per cent. Every game we had was a hard fought game up in Scotland and physical.
"You had to overcome that test every game. I felt we did and we were on our way. As we said it just wasn't to be at the time. The work was definitely put into place there for sustained success after."
