Producer Mike Dean Continues His Wild Friendship With the Weeknd on His Own ‘4:23’: Album Review

A.D. Amorosi Famous since the top of the 1990s for bold, old-school, synth-rich productions of hardcore rappers (Scarface), multi-hyphenate hip-hop magnates (Kanye West, Travis Scott) and symphonically scored R&B vocalists (Beyoncé, the Weeknd), Mike Dean always sounds as if he’s having the most fun on his chill solo excursions. Take the surprise drop this past weekend of “4:23,” another of Dean’s schmoked-up stoner efforts that, like 2020’s buoyant instrumental album “4:20,” is equal parts steely sci-fi epic soundtrack and spaced-out dream-pop.“4:23” is occasionally reminiscent of Dean’s home-recorded, souped-up synth-works, full of proggy impromptu noodling carved from larger ice block suites. But this new album mostly features tracks more succinct and cutting — actual songs. For such freshly anointed precision, we can likely credit Dean’s steadfast collaborator, tour partner and streaming network co-star, the Weeknd, who takes on a role here as the executive producer of “4:23.”

Everything But the Girl’s Excellent Surprise Return, ‘Fuse,’ Picks up Right Where They Left Off 24 Years Ago: Album Review

Jem Aswad Senior Music Editor For those without long memories, Everything But the Girl are a British duo that first emerged in the early 1980s as a sort of neo-jazz outfit combining Tracey Thorn’s virtuoso but downcast vocals and Ben Watt’s formidable guitar playing. Over the next 15 years they morphed impressively through different styles — from Smiths-style jangly alt-rock to the slick pop of “The Language of Life” — but with 1994’s “Amplified Heart,” electronics began to enter their latest jazz-trio-ish incarnation. And when house music producer Todd Terry’s dancefloor-driven remix of that album’s “Missing” became a surprise global hit, Watt immediately embraced the then-burgeoning drum n’ bass scene in the U.K. and within months was behind the turntables for nearly all of the group’s live sets. The next two albums, “Walking Wounded” and “Temperamental,” evolved this sound, with beats and atmospheric keyboards creating the backdrop for Thorn’s increasingly soulful singing.

Stone cold: Metallica was once told not to make eye contact with Mick Jagger

now-79-year-old frontman, Mick Jagger.Initially, the first time that Metallica opened for anyone since 1992 was deemed “an honor and a privilege,” the band’s drummer, Lars Ulrich, said on this week’s episode of the podcast “Club Random With Bill Maher.”“At that time, we had played shows over our career with Deep Purple and AC/DC, with a few other bands, all the bands that I had posters of on my wall when I was a kid. And so the last one of those boxes to check was the Stones,” Ulrich told Maher.“So we’re sitting backstage, and — and this is in no way a judgment on the Stones, this is really more about us — at one point a a personal assistant or whatever comes and says, ‘Mick Jagger’s gonna walk through here in a couple minutes, he’s going over to his private gym in his truck and he’s going to warm up before the show.

Tyler, the Creator’s ‘Estate Sale’ Puts a Cap on ‘Call Me’ Era, Gives Deluxe Editions a Good Name: Album Review

Yousef Srour If “Call Me If You Get Lost” was Tyler, the Creator’s Tour de France, then “The Estate Sale” must be his victory lap. Deluxe albums have become commonplace within hip-hop since Lil Uzi Vert’s release of “Eternal Atake (Deluxe) – LUV vs. The World 2”in 2020. Many artists have followed suit, tacking a few B-sides onto the beginning of the album so that you unintentionally listen to the whole project. “The Estate Sale,” on the other hand, uses its eight new tracks to to complement the existing themes on Tyler Baudelaire’s last project as he journeys across the globe with his ivory Golf le Fleur* travel trunk. Picking up right where the original album left off,“The Estate Sale” begins with a short interlude from DJ Drama and Tyler, the Creator reflecting on the successes of “CMIYGL,” from the sold-out tour to his second Grammy award for best rap album. Accompanied by the same palette of bells and orchestral swells that brushed “CMIYGL’s” outro, “Safari,” Tyler thanks his fans for their unwavering support on “Everything Must Go” before abruptly sounding the alarms that launch the deluxe into motion.

Boygenius’ ‘The Record’ Finds an Ideal Blend of Stark Individuality and Supergroup Charm: Album Review

Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic The three women of Boygenius — Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker — have made alluding to their forebears a hallmark of their band. Witness the cover of their first EP in 2018, when they re-created the casual iconography of the debut album sleeve of a prior supergroup — Crosby, Stills & Nash — or when they posed as Nirvana on a recent Rolling Stone cover. On their first full-length album, prosaically titled “The Record,” the references come fast and furious, in song titles or random lines: the Beatles with “Revolution 0,” Sheryl Crow with “Not Strong Enough,” Virginia Woolf with “Letters to an Old Poet,” Joan Didion and the Cure with scattered borrowings or citations, and last but not least, Leonard Cohen with, um, “Leonard Cohen.”
