Former West Ham United striker Carlton Cole has accused Manchester United of failing to look after Jesse Lingard's "welfare," amid the ongoing uncertainty about his short-term future.
The attacking-midfielder, who is out-of-contract in the summer, is a target for Newcastle United and they have been in discussions with United in the last few days about the possibility of signing him on loan for the remainder of the season.
Despite Lingard being prepared to join the Magpies, who are looking to avoid relegation this season, United have played hard ball over the financial package that Newcastle will have to pay to complete the deal, although the Manchester Evening News understands that there are no issues relating to the player's wages or the loan fee itself.
But with United coming under more and more pressure to find a temporary home for Lingard ahead of the transfer window closing on Monday evening, former Hammers striker Cole has slammed the club for their treatment of the England international, who is set to leave the club permanently once his contract expires in June.
"I think it's bang out of order that Man United are doing this to him," Cole told talkSPORT.
"That's not Lingard's value. He doesn't play. They're not looking after the player's welfare."
Meanwhile, fellow talkSPORT pundit Ally McCoist has accused United of trying to capitalise on the wealth of Newcastle's new owners, suggesting that they have put the asking price up as a result of the financial backing the St James' Park club now has.
"If Manchester United are taking advantage of the fact that Newcastle's owners have a lot of dough, I'm not happy about it," McCoist explained.
