Erik ten Hag has pointed to the persistent injury setbacks Manchester United have faced as a reason why their season has been stagnant.
Since the start of pre-season, the Reds have had as many as 20 first-team players sidelined with issues with some yet to play this term. Amad is back in training but has yet to make an appearance while Tyrell Malacia’s return from a serious knee problem has been pushed back to January.
Casemiro is out until after Christmas while Lisandro Martinez will not play again until the new year although is back in individual training. Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Christian Eriksen all missed the stalemate with Liverpool to take the tally of injured players up to seven, albeit the latter is back on the training pitch.

United are not the only team to be suffering with injuries at present. Newcastle, Tottenham and Chelsea have all been hit hard with the majority of the league suffering with five or more absences. MEN Sport has taken a look at the present picture.
Eddie Howe’s squad has been stretched amid Newcastle’s first season back in the Champions League, which they have now exited. Nick Pope will not be back from his shoulder issue until April while Jacob Murphy, Harvey Barnes and Joe Willock are all out until 2024. Kieran Trippier, Alexander Isak and Joelinton are also significant absentees.
Wesley Fofana is not expected back until June while Mauricio Pochettino is looking at March for Marc Cucurella’s return. Reece James and Robert Sanchez will do well to get back before the end of January while Ben Chilwell’s 2023 is over.
