However, given that he has started only four Premier League matches since his £35.1million transfer from Ajax in September 2020 - and none of them this season - there is growing frustration from the Netherlands international.

Speaking to The Football Show on Sky Sports News, former Manchester City goalkeeper David James said: "When you try and analyse what happens in a game when he's involved, quite often his involvement in the game will end up in a loss of possession. Whether it's a poor pass, poor touch, bad tackle or whatever.
"Not all the time, of course, there are some positives in there. He doesn't contribute in the positive way you would think Manchester United need in order to go on and win games."
James added: "It didn't happen under Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer] and it hasn't happened under [Ralf] Rangnick either.
