The Ice Palace was more than just somewhere to learn how to skate or to have fun with friends on weekends. The venue also hosted fancy dress competitions, live performances and more.
Not just amateur skaters would use the rink, with professionals often taking to the ice. This included when the Manchester venue hosted the National Ice Skating Championships in 1911 and the World Championships in 1922.
The MEN recently asked people to share their memories of the Manchester Ice Palace, with many getting in touch to tell their stories. Christopher said: "Always a treat to go here a few times and try to skate (although never became any good) in the late Fifties/early Sixties. Once an hour, the ice was cleared for a few minutes for ‘professional’ standard skaters to dance with an open rink. They had an organ to accompany dancing in the gallery - which may have been an electronic Hammond."
