Peter Debruge Chief Film Critic The creator of “The Creator,” Gareth Edwards, started his filmmaking career teaching himself VFX at home. He’s an innovator on that front, devising ways to generate creepy CG monsters for “Monsters” more than a dozen years ago, then overseeing deceptively massive blockbusters, like “Godzilla,” ever since (deceptive because much of that stunning scale comes from virtual detail added in post).

‘Pet Sematary: Bloodlines’ Review: Paramount+ Resurrects a Property That Hardly Needed a Prequel

Michael Nordine author Evil, as conceived by Stephen King, is an inexorable force as old as the world itself. It exists in countless forms, some of which can be staved off for a time but none of which can be extinguished permanently. It’s as much a part of the earth as it is a part of us, and it persists in a way none of us can or will.

Gareth Edwards directed his first movie, the 2010 indie “Monsters,” it could scarcely have been a more DIY endeavor. Netflix Lands Richard Linklater-Helmed ‘Hit Man’ For $20 Million Toronto Deal; Aggregate/AGC Studios Pic Stars Glen Powell & Adria Arjona

EXCLUSIVE: Netflix closed a $20 million deal on Hit Man, making the biggest deal at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival and of the year for that matter. After the Richard Linklater-directed noir comic thriller debuted to raves at Venice, the film was expected to fetch the biggest deal of the fall festivals so far. Hit Man did not disappoint. Hit Man stars Top Gun Maverick’s Glen Powell and Adria Arjona (Andor) playing the most unlikely romantic partners, in performances that will boost each of their careers. Especially Powell, who co-wrote with Linklater what will be a major star turn for him. Netflix got US, UK, Australia/New Zealand, India, South Korea, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Singapore, Philippines, and Iceland. There is also a theatrical component to the deal, I’ve heard.

Get Me Out of Here! and this month's hellish SAS show, the politician is hoping to come out smelling of roses in the public eye.

‘Sly’ Review: A Profile of Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky Road of a Career Is Headier Than You Expect

Owen Gleiberman Chief Film Critic For decades, as I’ve watched Sylvester Stallone on talk shows or caught bits and pieces of promotional interviews with him, my impression, without pondering it much, has been that he’s a dude with a certain charismatic native intelligence. Yet “Sly,” the infectious and fascinating portrait of Stallone and his movies that premiered today at the Toronto Film Festival, is built around an interview with Stallone conducted in his splendid, art-bedecked Mediterranean-style mansion in Beverly Hills (he has since sold it to Adele). And throughout the film, he’s so calmly but blazingly articulate, so candid about the processes of moviemaking and his strengths (and weaknesses) as an actor, so wise about the meaning of his own stardom, that I realized, with a touch of embarrassment, a prejudice I’ve been carrying around for 47 years.

‘Writing on the stall’ Comedian writes musical based on bathroom graffiti

Caitlin Cook wrote an entire musical based on quotes she found scrawled on bathroom stalls. After college, the art history major grew tired of how pretentious that world could be, and became fascinated with bathroom graffiti.“I loved the idea that if you take all that elitism away, you just have people trying to communicate with each other,” Cook, 33, told The Post. She first found inspiration in a dive bar in Chicago: “Writing on toilet walls is neither for critical acclaim nor financial reward. It is the purest form of art.”Thus began her 10-year search for quotes scribbled in restrooms in places like Australia, New Zealand, Vietnam, Indonesia and Iceland. In women’s bathrooms, she often finds “gossipy, fun” dialogue and empowering notes.
