Coronation Street’s Beverly Callard is worlds away from Liz McDonald in first look at new show Newark, Newark

BEVERLEY Callard has landed herself a new comedy role, less than two years after saying her goodbyes to the cobbles. The former Corrie icon is taking on the role of Pauline in Gold's recently announced comedy Newark, Newark.

Every die-hard Coronation Street fan knows Liz McDonald, the reliable Rovers barmaid notably known for her tumultuous relationship with Jim McDonald (Charles Lawson). But while her character left the cobbled streets of Weatherfield in favour of a new life in Spain in June, 2020, TV fans have not seen the last of the actress who has portrayed her on-and-off since 1989, Beverley Callard.

In December, 2021, she was announced in the line-up of Newark, Newark, a brand new comedy programme due on the air in March, 2022. Commissioned by Gold and created by Nathan Foad (The Great British Bake Off: An Extra Slice, The Young Offenders), this three-part series will be set in the small working class market town, in Nottinghamshire in the East Midlands.

Newark, Newark will follow pugnacious chip shop manager and exhausted matriarch Maxine as she tries to ride out her divorce and find new love. But with her big-mouthed and soft-bellied son Leslie, who dramatically comes out as gay to the surprise of no one, it's easier said than done.
