Katie Reul editor The 66th annual British Film Institute (BFI) London Film Festival announced winners Saturday evening for a competition group representing a diverse selection of stories ranging from period pieces to eerie thrillers. Writer-director Marie Kreutzer’s “Corsage,” was recognized with the festival’s highest honor — the best film award — continuing the historical drama’s festival praise after lead actress Vicky Krieps was awarded the Un Certain Regard best performance prize at Cannes. Set during Christmas in 1877, “Corsage” follows Empress Elizabeth as she attempts to find liberation from the stifling conformity of her stuffy, image-focused lifestyle as a Vienna royal. Though the film is in part based on the historical figure, who reigned for 44 years, artistic deviations are made in the former ruler’s story.

The great playwright Tom Stoppard and his simpatico director Patrick Marber make a lasting gift of remembrance in the brilliant, gorgeous and devastating new play Leopoldstadt, opening tonight at Broadway’s Longacre Theatre. But it’s a gift that comes with strings, ropes even, the author seems to be warning us: There’s burden attached to memory, and pain, and, above all, responsibility – duty, even – that accompanies every yellowed snapshot in an old family album and every fading face that once seemed fixed with such clarity.

Marilyn Stasio Theater Critic In a radical departure from his usual intellectually esoteric style, Tom Stoppard’s new play is an intensely personal family drama. “Leopoldstadt,” which takes its name from the Jewish quarter of Vienna, doesn’t concern itself with quantum mechanics, metaphysical mysteries, Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle or Fermat’s Last Theorem — all topics the playwright has tackled in previous plays. But because it follows the disintegrating fortunes of a close-knit Jewish family (and their goyish relatives by marriage), it does deal, in its way, with chaos theory.  The set (Richard Hudson, with a shout-out to the props team), costumes (Brigitte Reiffenstuel) and especially the lighting design (Neil Austin) bathe the first scene in an aura of domestic harmony. It’s 1899 and almost Christmas in Vienna. Everyone in the tastefully furnished Merz household appears to be approaching the 20th century with glad hearts. The family trade is prospering, the men are successful businessmen and academics, the women are smart and articulate and the children are well-behaved.

Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder joined The Strokes on stage in Seattle this week.The band were opening for Red Hot Chili Peppers when Vedder joined them for a rendition of ‘Juicebox’.Vedder has long been a fan of the song, which appeared on The Strokes’ 2005 album, ‘First Impressions Of Earth’. The grunge frontman previously joined the New York band on stage back in 2019, when they performed ‘Juicebox’ and Pearl Jam’s ‘Hard To Imagine’.He’d called it one of his “favourite” songs and has previously recalled telling The Strokes’ frontman Julian Casablancas how much he liked the song.Casablancas admitted later that it was inspired by Pearl Jam’s ‘Not for You.’“I would have had no idea, I still don’t really hear it… I think it’s totally original,” Vedder said.

John Hopewell Chief International CorrespondentAdding to its growing roster of overseas drama titles, Germany’s ZDF Studios has snagged international distribution rights to “Clean Sweep,” a six-part Irish thriller which is set to premiere on Sundance Now and Irish public broadcaster RTÉ.“Clean Sweep” stars Charlene McKenna, Captain Swing in “Peaky Blinders,” in a crime drama told from the point-of-view of the killer who is also, unusually, a self-sacrificing mother and wife. Filming is now underway.McKenna, whose credits take in “Bloodlands” and “Vienna Blood,” plays Shelly Mohan, a woman living a quiet life in Western Ireland as a housewife and mother of three who kills her former partner in crime when he threatens to expose her dark past.

Thania Garcia The long-running rock band KISS have found itself as the butt of online jokes following a concert in Vienna on June 26, where the band’s logo was displayed with an Australian flag instead of an Austrian one.After the band wrapped its show at the Wiener Stadthalle arena, a screen displayed the phrase “KISS loves you Vienna” as fans were leaving the arena. Audience members began to notice the KISS logo featured the Australian flag, rather than the flag of Austria, of which Vienna is the capital.
