Rithy Panh on Fact and Fiction at the Busan Film Festival

Patrick Frater Asia Bureau Chief Rithy Panh, director of “Rice People” and “S21 The Khmer Rouge Killing Machine” is an icon of art-house cinema, at once political, unique, and charming. The iconic image may be another of his confections – a palatable work built on uncomfortable facts. On the incomplete evidence of a 50-minute on-stage dialog at the Busan International Film Festival on Sunday, Panh comes across as simultaneously contrarian and principled. A curmudgeonly veteran and yet a filmmaker still curious to learn. “If there were no Khmer Rouge maybe I would not be a filmmaker,” he said of the Communist insurgents, who won the Cambodian civil war in 1975 and whose brutality and atrocities he has spent a lifetime documenting and exposing.

Vivienne Chow Venice Production Bridge – Venice Gap-Financing Market  “Mirror” – Director: Wu De-Chuen“Mirror” is a story of three men from different generations of the same family. They live in different eras and have starkly different jobs —as an engraver, a tailor and a trader. But their lives are oddly similar. They share the same ambition to attain the definition of man, but at the same time, they each take their significant others for granted and undermine their own values, thus reliving the paths of their predecessors. “Fathers’ Video Tapes” – Director: Baboo LiaoTaiwan might be one of the most liberal societies in Asia today, especially in the matter of gay rights and was the first territory in the region to legalize same-sex marriage. But there was a time where homosexuals on the island struggled for acceptance. “Father’s Video Tapes” gives a nod to this forgotten past of Taiwan’s LGBT community through a three-part narrative that inserts audiences between real space and VR, through bodily interactivity.

Architectural Digest Edited Looted Cambodian Relics Out of San Francisco Mansion Photo Shoot

reported Monday.According to the Post, the luxury magazine published a photo of a remodeled mansion in a January 2021 issue that had been altered to hide two ancient Khmer sculptures that the Cambodian government say could be stolen. The photo of the $42 million mansion, owned by lawyer and author Sloan Lindemann Barnett and her husband, Roger Barnett, an executive at a nutritional supplements company, showcased two empty pedestals. However, another version of the image, found on the magazine’s website, revealed the pedestals weren’t actually bare but instead topped with two ancient Khmer sculptures. The Cambodian government says the sculptures, which feature heads of gods and demons, match artifacts that are listed among the country’s 10 most important stolen relics, the Post learned. The sculptures aren’t where this story ends, though, as the relics are reportedly a part of Lindemann Barnett’s billionaire parents’ larger collection.

In Ukraine, female war reporters build on legacy of pioneers

LOS ANGELES -- Clarissa Ward interrupted her live TV report on Ukrainian refugees to help a distraught older man, then a woman, down a steep and explosion-mangled path, gently urging them on in their language.A day later, Lynsey Addario, a photographer for The New York Times, captured a grim image of a Russian mortar attack’s immediate outcome: the bodies of a mother and her two children crumpled on a road, amid their suitcase, backpacks and a pet carrier. The memorable reports illustrate both the skill and gutsiness of female journalists serving as eyewitnesses to Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine and the way their presence has changed the nature of war reporting. They cover the tactics of war, but give equal measure to its toll.“People are so exhausted, they can barely walk,” Ward told viewers in her report. “It’s just an awful, awful scene.
