A review into HS2 will be launched by Labour if the party is elected next year, the shadow Chancellor has said.
Rachel Reeves used her final Labour conference speech before the election next year to address the now-cancelled rail project, saying shadow transport minister Louise Haigh will kick-start an independent inquiry into the scheme. Last week, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak confirmed, after weeks of speculation, that the leg of the high speed line from Birmingham to Manchester was being scrapped.
In its place will be a new Network North, funded by £36 billion in savings from cancelling the project, according to the government. Labour has also said it is unable to commit to resurrecting the line, because land purchased for the railway is set to be sold off by the government.

Ms Reeves, MP for Leeds West, has also pledged a review into the high speed. She said in her speech: “Look at HS2, major transport project lost, another promise broken because govt couldn't keep costs under control, already £30bn over budget by the time they realised they had a problem
"When it comes to getting things built and projects delivered, Britain has become the sick man of Europe with HS2 coming in at 10 times the cost of the French equivalent. That is why our shadow transport secretary Louise Haigh will commission an independent expert inquiry into HS2 to learn the lessons for the future.”
She went on: "It is incumbent on government to make sure major projects are delivered, on time and on budget. I will not tolerate taxpayers' money being
