Labour have won the Rutherglen & Hamilton West by-election.
In his acceptance speech, Michael Shanks said “it is truly the honour of my life”.
He claimed 17,845 votes in the by-election that was sparked by the removal of Margaret Ferrier following her Covid breaches.
The SNP’s Katy Loudon came second in the poll, claiming 8399 votes.
Shanks took the seat with a majority of 9446.
Thomas Kerr of the Conservatives came third with 1192 votes.
Just over one-third of eligible voters went to the polls to cast their ballots in the crunch Rutherglen & Hamilton West by-election.
The turnout in the Westminster ballot was 37.19 per cent – with a total of 30,351 votes cast by the electorate of 82,104 people.

You are not welcome here, genocide supporters,” said a man who came up to Sidner while she was in the middle of reporting on air.
