The Coronation chair which will soon be used by King Charles is steeped in 700 years of history and is now being renovated ahead its starring role in this May's proceedings. The chair was constructed around 1300 for King Edward I by Master Walter, the King's Master Painter.

Krista Blessley, Westminster Abbey’s paintings conservator, has been working to clean and preserve the chair ahead of the coronation. She described her pride at helping to conserve an historic object central to the life of the nation: “It’s a real privilege to work on the coronation chair.
“It’s so important to our country’s history and in the history of the monarchy, and it’s really unique as a conservator to work on something that’s part of a working collection and still used for the original function it was made for.” In preparation for the coronation, Krista has spent the past four months meticulously preserving the flaking gilding and cleaning the chair’s surface using sponges and cotton swabs.
