Good Morning Britain 's Kate Garraway is opening up about the final year of her late husband Derek Draper's life in a new documentary for ITV. Lobbyist-turned-psychotherapist Derek died aged 56 in January after a three-year battle with Covid-19.
Kate Garraway : Derek's Story looks back on the final year of Derek's life, providing personal insight into his personal struggles with illness and highlighting the challenges faced by millions in the UK suffering with serious illness and disability.
The film will also give an "unflinching view" on how Kate and her family cared for Derek - as well as the moments of love and joy they spent together before his death. The ITV documentary will also reflect on Derek's life before contracting Covid, from his high-profile political career to his relationship with Kate and their years of marriage together.
"My name is Derek Draper. I want you to hear my story," the former spin doctor says in the film.
"I want to be heard." Speaking about filming Derek's Story, Kate said: "Obviously when we started making this documentary early last year, we had no idea the events that would unfold that ultimately took Derek from us. And in January 2024, I wondered if it was right that it should ever come to air.
"But I didn’t want to let those who have given us so much support over the last four years down, and the carers paid and unpaid who in their thousands of letters to me, feel Derek’s story has given them a voice. Also, I remembered so vividly that the idea of making this third documentary at all came from Derek himself."
