‘Joker’ Tops Oscar Nominations, But Female Directors, Actors of Color Virtually Ignored

Harriet Frank Jr., the two-time Oscar nominee forHudandNorma Raewho partnered with her husband, the late Irving Ravetch, to form one of the great screenwriting teams in Hollywood history, has died. She was 96.Frank died Tuesday at her home in Los Angeles, her nephew, Michael Frank, told The New York Times.Frank and Ravetch worked on 17 features together, including eight directed by Martin Ritt over a 32-year span and three that were adapted from William Faulkner novels.

He might not have a date to Oscars 2020 (yet), but we wouldn't mind being Brad Pitt's date to the 92nd Academy Awards going by his look at the 92nd Oscar Nominees Luncheon. The actor, who has been nominated at the Oscars this year for his role in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, attended the luncheon with other Oscar nominees. The actor joined Leonardo DiCaprio, Cynthia Erivo, Charlize Theron, Kathy Bates, Al Pacino and Robert De Niro at the event.

Filmdom’s battle between the haves and have-nots moved off-screen when Oscar nominations were announced earlier this month: Four films scored 10 or more nominations, with Todd Phillips’ “Joker,” leading the pack with 11, and Sam Mendes’ World War I nail-biter “1917,” Martin Scorsese’s epic gangster tale “The Irishman” and Quentin Tarantino’s retro “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” trailing a tick behind at 10 each. It’s rare for three films to land 10 or more nominations, let alone four.
