Former Liverpool and England centre-back Jamie Carragher has questioned whether Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has the right players for his preferred midfield system.
United's midfield, which was one of their strongest assets last season, has been heavily criticised following their opening two matches of the new campaign. The Reds were overrun by Wolves in their opening game of the season and were disjointed during Saturday's 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.
Ten Hag has deployed the same midfield trio for each of United's opening two matches, immediately integrating new signing Mason Mount into his plans. He has started alongside Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro in the engine room.

Though Mount has been added to United's squad to operate as a free-roaming No.8, he has so far, like the rest of his teammates, failed to provide Casemiro with sufficient cover in the middle of the pitch, leaving the Reds vulnerable. United are crying out for a second defensive midfielder and are looking to bring one in ahead of the transfer window closing next week.
And for former Liverpool defender Carragher, United's midfield is the source of their early-season problems, claiming that Ten Hag has not got the right tools to deploy a midfield in the way that he wants to.
"I think they have big problems in midfield," Carragher told Sky Sports. "The set-up of their midfield is not right for me. I think there are a few things wrong.
"The manager's set up, what he is asking them to do in terms of the profile of players, is not right.
