I'm A Celeb fans were left squirming this week after Nella Rose and Nigel Farage took on the first food Bushtucker Trial where they indulged in pizza slices with a creepy-crawly difference. Instead of the usual pepperoni topping, the celebs were treated to chicken feet, giant mealworms and camel udders to name a few in the taste-tangling task.
While the Bushtucker Trials have provided some of the best moments from the hit ITV series, a registered dietician warned that there are "clear risks" involved for any celebs who decide to step up to the plate. Roxane Bakker, who is the Head of Nutrition at Vitl spoke to the Daily Star about what the diet of rice and beans would do to a person's body - as well as how the food-themed Bushtucker Trials would affect our health.
Speaking of the trials, which tend to involve other delicacies such as kangaroo testicles, cockroaches and witchetty grubs, Roxane's initial words didn't bode well. "The impact of eating animal organs that aren't typically found in the Western diet will depend more so on the quantity of which they're being eaten; as with many foods in our diet, too much of anything is never good," she explained.
"There are some clear risks to bear in mind, such as eating liver or kidneys which carry a huge build-up of toxins." TV nutritionist Gillian McKeith was very aware of the risks during her eating trial back in 2010 and only managed to eat one out of five dishes to win stars for camp. Besides Happy Mondays star Shaun Ryder, Gillian stated: "I need you to know that I'm vegan so I won't eat any insects." "It goes against everything I believe in so I'm just not going to do it.
