Former Coronation Street actor Sean Wilson, who played Martin Platt from 1985 until 2005, has shared his concerns about the show's future, declaring that it is in "crisis" due to a declining number of viewers. Sean left the soap back in 2005 after a disagreement over a storyline which would see his character falling for 16 year old Katy Harris, played by Lucy-Jo Hudson. He then briefly made a return in 2018, before leaving the cobbles for good, with his character relocating to New Zealand.
Sean has now shared that he's not shocked that the ITV soap, which used to pull in over 20 million viewers, is losing some of its audience. Discussing this, Sean has argued that the show has replaced its relatable and humorous stories with serious plots like Seb's murder and Paul's Motor Neurone Disease (MND) diagnosis. According to the Daily Star, Sean said: "I think the world of soaps is a different vehicle nowadays.
I think I was part of the British soap industry at the best time, the halcyon years when there was 18 or 21 million people watching it. He then suggested that years ago who could have walked down the streets and heard people laughing with their windows open while watching the show, which is something you won't find happening now. Adding that people don't have to watch the soap anyway due to the amount of channels and choices, Sean shared that it used to be something people would watch with their families.
