The outlook for the remainder of the season looks bleak for Jesse Lingard, insists John Barnes, after the 29-year-old saw his move away from Old Trafford blocked.
Newcastle and West Ham were both keen on a winter loan move for the England international who was keen for regular football in a World Cup year.
Lingard's contract at Old Trafford will expire at the end of the season and it looks increasingly likely that the Reds will see him move away from the club on a free transfer.
And former Liverpool and England great, Barnes, feels Lingard has a big decision to make in the summer when he chooses his next club.
"Lingard would have been a good signing for Newcastle but he hasn’t gone, so they have to forget about it. I don’t know where Lingard’s future lies," Barnes told BonusBetCodes.
"I don’t think it will be at United because it hasn’t worked there, as much as he did well at West Ham.
"With the players United have, they’re not going to turn to Lingard. West Ham would be the obvious place for Lingard to move because of how well he did there.
"But he’s not gone anywhere, so he’ll have a big decision to make at the end of the season."
