A gardening expert has issued a warning over a popular plant that could actually prove to be "highly invasive" and lead to damage to your property.
Bamboo could cause issues that may leave you thousands of pounds out of pocket, despite being a popular choice for many due to its long life and durability. The plant can easily grow out of control and is even strong enough to punch through your driveway, resulting in difficult to deal with damage.
As a non-native species to the UK, bamboo actually spreads at a different rate here compared to in its native habitats, reports the Mirror.
The plant is categorised as "running" on "clumping" bamboo, with the running variety the one that most often poses risk to the outdoor areas of your property. This is because the bamboo sprouts structures several metres long, eventually becoming new canes. These structures, called rhizomes, can grow quickly and pose risk to your home.
Managing director of Root Barrier Store Jon Barton said bamboo is a “marvellous example of nature at its resilient best”. He added: “If bamboo's characteristics were paralleled with human qualities, it would be a soldier, a marine or a SAS operative. It is incredibly tenacious, strong and able to survive where other plants can't.”
The plant is often compared to Japanese knotweed. This invasive plant is known to be damaging to homes and gardens, with knotweed spreading around the UK.
However, unlike Japanese knotweed, bamboo is planted deliberately in gardens.
Speaking to the Sun, Mr Barton added: "Allowing bamboo to encroach onto a neighbouring property can cause disputes. However, when it starts to spread under the neighbour's tarmac and pushes up towards the daylight, it then becomes a costly problem to resolve.
