However, it could have been much different. Sir Alex Ferguson had a change of heart a few months after he left and called Gillespie to try and bring him back to United. While he will not regret bringing in Cole, it seems he may have had second thoughts about Gillespie being the one who he sold.
Explaining to club media in 2020 why he left in the first place, the now-48-year-old Gillespie said: “I think when I did leave they had the European rule and, at that time, being from Northern Ireland I was classified as a foreigner, and you could only play two foreigners and three ‘assimilated’ players at the time.
