I tried Poundland’s new Chris the Caterpillar cake - and I have a message for Colin and Cuthbert

When it comes to supermarket sweet treats, the caterpillar cake is one of the favourite among Brits. Colin the Caterpillar from Marks and Spencer has been a popular choice for many children’s parties - and some adults too - for three decades.
Making his first appearance in 1990, Colin has put a smile on people’s faces with his cheeky chocolatey grin. Over the years, other supermarkets have tried to replicate his success from Morrisons to Sainsbury's.
Now the latest cake to arrive on the scene is Poundland’s Chris the Caterpillar cake. It comes after Aldi caused a storm with its Cuthbert version recently.

There was so much controversy that M&S decided to take legal action against Aldi, claiming it was too similar to Colin. In response, Aldi launched a #FreeCuthbert Twitter campaign.
Shoppers are already going crazy for Poundland’s Chris the Caterpillar cake, so our colleague at Birmingham Live decided to see if he was worth the hype. Dayna Farrington enlisted the help of her family to blind taste-test the cakes - and here’s what she found out.

"He looks lovely. I've not seen him before, he must be new in," said the kind Poundland checkout assistant as I handed Chris the Caterpillar over at the till. He cost me £4.50 - slightly pricey for Poundland - but not that pricey in the Caterpillar cakes stakes.
I must admit when I unboxed Chris, he didn't look as appealing as the other two. More basic perhaps? He looked more like a giant mini roll. A Chris the Slug perhaps? He was lacking the white chocolate feet that Cuthbert and Colin had.
