Over half of parents whose adult kids live at home are asking them to contribute towards food bills, energy costs and mortgage repayments, a recent study by Compare the Market found. The study says that parents across Manchester are charging their kids around £101 on average per month.
But with the average rent in Manchester now creeping past the £1,000 a month mark, according to recent figures from Zoopla, those renting with their parents are making huge savings. Young adults can save up to £10,000 a year by staying put in their childhood bedrooms, according to the Compare the Market data.

The average cost of a deposit on a house in Manchester has been rising over the last few years, with latest figures coming in at around £29,480. For renters, saving that amount can be a decade-long battle against rising living costs and high mortgage rates passed down to them in the form of rent increases.
And with the average age of a first time buyer in the UK now 34, four years older than in 2007, staying at home for a few years to save is a “good financial decision”, according to Louise Elliot, 23.
