The summer weather is ideal for your garden, as the sun helps your plants to become lush, green and floral.
But to ensure they don't become too large and overpower your outdoor space, pruning them often is essential, as this keeps them clean and tidy.
Not only this, but doing it during summer will ensure they remain able to flower in the future, as many are dormant during the colder winter months.
The Express reports that one gardening expert has revealed the three plants you should always prune before the summer is out, in order to give them the best chance of blooming next year too.
Taking to her gardening blog, Blooming Lucky, Louise Findlay-Wilson has shared several pruning jobs that should be carried out in August.
English lavender is a popular choice of garden plant, as it's "hardier and longer-lived" than some other varieties, according to Louise.
But to keep it looking good, it needs "firm pruning" in August.
Louise instructed: “You must cut back quite hard otherwise your plant will become quite ‘leggy’. But don’t cut back so hard that you are cutting into old wood. If you do, you’ll reduce the flowering potential of your poor old lavender the following year.”
The expert also warned not to remove any green shoots from the plant.
It may look "less attractive" after pruning, but "it's well worth it" as it means the plant will become full of healthy flowers next year.
Another one of Louise’s “big garden jobs for August” is to tackle wisteria plants.
Louise said: “I know that if I don’t get on with this [pruning wisteria], the fast-growing climber will soon become a complete tangly jumble.
“Wisteria is pruned twice a year with the first pruning being done now. The second is then in January or February.”
