Follow OK! on Threads here: https://www.threads.net/@ok_mag "As soon as everyone found out I was pregnant, that's all anyone wanted to talk to me about. Suddenly, my individuality took a backseat. We knew we had zero support around us, yet I had this picture-perfect idea of motherhood in my head.
I thought I had it all figured out – regular date nights, me time, and a clear vision of what parenthood would be like. I felt prepared, you know? But reality hit me like a ton of bricks the moment we got home from the hospital with our new bundle of joy. As soon as the oxytocin wore off, I thought, ‘Whoa, this is actually my life now!’ To make matters more challenging, we quickly realised our son had allergies, which caused issues and additional pressure with breastfeeding since we couldn't access milk-free formula.
I had to fight tooth and nail to advocate for both myself and my baby. But honestly, it felt like there wasn't any focus on me as a person. It was disempowering, confusing, and made me doubt myself.
Suddenly, the person I was before becoming a mum seemed to fade into the background. I wondered if I had made the right decision to have a baby. I constantly questioned myself, feeling like I didn't fit the mould of a ‘typical’ mother.
I mean, I wanted to be a mum, but I also wanted to retain my own identity. It felt like an either/or situation – like there couldn’t be a balance. It was tough.
And the intrusive thoughts! I worried relentlessly about bad things happening to my baby. I checked if he was breathing every two seconds. It fed into my deep-seated fear of loss, which I didn't even know existed until I became a mother.
