As of April last year, 155 charging points with 300 connectors are around Manchester however, this won’t nearly be enough for the future.
It is estimated that around 140,00 vehicles in Manchester will be electric covering around 75% of all vehicles in the city.
It is expected that the new charging points will be placed in council-owned car parks, libraries, leisure centres and more.
Manchester City Council will invest over £3m into the charging points and their installation, with over £1m coming from the Greater Manchester Combined Authority and £2m from the Government’s Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Fund.
The council currently has a list of over 40 public areas suitable for electric charging points that will be reviewed for approval.
Councillor Tracey Rawlins, Executive Member for Environment said: “Dramatically increasing the use of electric vehicles is an important part of reducing the city’s carbon emissions to tackle climate change.
“We want to keep improving public transport and encourage active travel options, such as walking and cycling, for shorter journeys but undoubtedly electric vehicles also have an important part to play.
