There was a large police presence on a Stockport high-street last night after a thief armed with a crowbar stormed a branch of the Co-op and stole cash.
It happened at the Co-op store on Castle Street in Edgeley at around 9.30pm on Monday night. The firm said an 'intruder' brandished the crowbar as a weapon during a 'robbery' at the store.
No one was injured but staff were left "very shaken", they said. Locals described the area outside the shop being taped off on Monday night and into Tuesday morning.

A large number of police officers were seen on the store's car park with forensic crime scene investigators combing the area inside the cordon for clues. The store, which was forced to close early afterwards, opened as normal first thing on Tuesday morning.
A spokesperson for Co-op confirmed: “There was an incident at our Edgeley store around 9:30pm yesterday evening (Monday, 22 August) when an intruder armed with a crowbar entered the store.
"Fortunately, no one was hurt but colleagues were left very shaken and are being fully supported.
"Co-op successfully campaigned for stiffer sentences for violence against retail workers, and urge anyone who may have information to come forward to Police who are investigating.”
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) have been approached for comment.
