There's little more unsettling than relaxing at home on a cosy winter's night and spotting a spider scuttling across your floor or walls.
Although house spiders in the UK are fairly harmless, they're not the ideal companions to have - but they're more likely to seek shelter indoors as the weather starts to get colder.
Thankfully, you don't have to rely on harsh chemicals or expensive spider repellents in order to banish them for good, as according to one expert, all you need is two common household ingredients you probably already have, the Mirror reports.
"Like all species, spiders need water and moisture to survive. From sinks and dishwashers to the warmth given off by appliances, it's the kitchen and bathroom that create the perfect moist environment to draw them in," explained Mike Norton, Trade and Projects director at Magnet Trade.
He continued: "Although they are mostly harmless, we don't want crawlers contaminating our food or creeping up on us in the bathroom."
There's a simple way that households can stop spiders from entering - and if you have washing up liquid and apple cider vinegar at home then you're in luck.
Spiders will be repelled by the scent of the vinegar and it works even better when combined with the soap, the Express writes.
The vinegar can be used as a spray or poured directly over the eight-legged beasts. And when mixing the two ingredients, you should use one cup of water with one cup of vinegar, then add two drops of washing up liquid.
You can then add it to an empty spray bottle and apply it to anywhere in your home that spiders may be getting in.
Another expert also suggests rubbing lemon peel all over window sills, skirting boards, and places spiders tend to show up, as they will be 'repelled
