Manchester United would likely have come away from Arsenal victorious on Sunday had Arsene Wenger's offside rule proposals been implemented.
United suffered their second away defeat of the season in dramatic fashion at the Emirates, losing 3-1 despite thinking they were 2-1 up as late as the 89th minute. Alejandro Garnacho looked to have grabbed the late winner when he raced through and finished past Aaron Ramsdale, but a lengthy VAR review adjudged him to be marginally offside.
The goal was ruled out and Arsenal, seemingly buoyed by the decision, went up the other end to take all three points themselves. Declan Rice fired home a deflected effort six minutes into added time, with Gabriel Jesus racing through to make it 3-1 shortly after.
But things could have been very different had Wenger, who is currently FIFA’s chief of global football development, seen his proposals for a revamp of the offside rule approved. As it stands, a player is offside if any part of their body that can legally score a goal is beyond the second-to-last player - including the goalkeeper.

However, in a bid to give more of an advantage to the attacking side, Wenger has proposed a major rule change. The Frenchman has suggested that a player would be onside if any goalscoring part of the body is in line with the second-to-last defender.
With those rules in place, Garnacho would have been deemed onside and his goal would have been given. Most of the Argentinian's body was in line with Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes, with his feet comfortably behind the Brazilian.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino has previously admitted the rules are under review, admitting
