A Greater Manchester hospital has issued an urgent plea for the public's help as more than 170 patients were left waiting in its accident and emergency department.
The Royal Bolton Hospital says its emergency department is facing huge pressure this week 'with a surge in demand and a large number of people waiting to be admitted for a bed'. More than 170 people were left waiting inside the A&E at lunchtime today, Monday February 26, according to the hospital.
Attendances to A&E are up 10 per cent in comparison to previous Mondays, causing NHS doctors to urge people to 'only attend in life or limb-threatening emergencies so that staff can prioritise care' for patients with the most serious needs. The warnings come as junior doctors are again in the midst of five days of strike action, at one of the busiest times of the year for the NHS as it grapples with increased pressure from winter illnesses.

The Royal Bolton Hospital issued a crisis message today, as a spokesperson said the emergency department is 'facing significant pressure this week'. Dr Francis Andrews, medical director at Bolton NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Winter is always an incredibly busy time for our emergency department and the latest round of industrial action means those pressures feel even greater.
“We have robust plans in place to reduce the impact as much as we can and to deliver safe and high quality care, but we’re once again asking for the public’s support to help us make sure we can treat our sickest patients as quickly as possible. We’re always here to help in life or limb-threatening emergencies, but if your condition isn’t urgent please consider seeking treatment elsewhere.
