The owner of a south Manchester restaurant that is set to close its doors at the end of the month has made a heart-breaking statement about the realities of running a business.
Eunji Noh announced at the start of the year that she would be closing The Thirsty Korean restaurant on Manchester Road in Chorlton due to the end of the lease for the venue. Following yesterday’s Budget announcement, Eunji said she could not ‘ignore’ the issues businesses in the hospitality industry face with VAT.
In the Spring Budget announcement, Chancellor Jeremy Hunt set out his latest plans for taxation and spending. Despite calls for VAT to be cut and a cap in business rates, the Chancellor did not make any announcements in these areas. Hospitality businesses had hoped the VAT would be cut down to 12.5% from its current level of 20%.

“I could not ignore anymore about VAT issue due to closing my business soon,” Eunji posted on the restaurant’s Instagram page. “It will be still the same that my hospitality friends would go through difficulties due to paying VAT and it pushes really backwards to people to open and run the independent business.”
In her post, Eunji, who has run her restaurant since 2019, also explained in further detail about how the VAT reduction could have helped businesses like hers. "First of all, VAT is charged based on revenue not the profit,” she explained.
“If you see the bill, 20 percent is not our money, it is government money. In my venue, two customers order one starter to share, one main dish each and one pint of beer each will cost around £50. And £10 is not our money.”
