When Susan moved into her home in a peaceful corner of Prestwich 39 years ago, she thought the serenity would last forever.
She raised her son on the quiet cul-de-sac just minutes away from Heaton Park, where, she says, children often play on the street. Her family would enjoy long summer afternoons which melted into evenings in the tranquillity of their back garden.
But around six years ago, Susan, who has asked that her real name isn't used, says a property on Sheepfoot Lane, the main road north of her street, appeared on AirBnb as a short-term rental house. The massive modern villa, which sleeps 16, boasts luxurious facilities including a private pool and hot tub - and began to attract large groups of people looking to celebrate in style.
Now, tension over the property has escalated in a saga which highlights all the pitfalls of the short-term lettings boom in Greater Manchester's residential neighbourhoods - pitting owners' freedoms against the peace of the people who live nearby.
Josie claims noise from the mansion keeps her awake at night, while another neighbour told the M.E.N it had affected her daughter's GCSE revision. Faced with claims that noise has reached 'unbearable' levels, the council and police have held meetings with the owners.
Meanwhile, the owners, Azmat and Farzana Ali, have made claims to the M.E.N that they have been victimised. They claim that in recent weeks their son's wedding was targeted by hooded intruders who vandalised the property, upset the bride, and subjected them to racist abuse.
