Actress Emma Rigby, who originally appeared in Hollyoaks as Hannah Ashworth from 2005 to 2010, has resigned from the soap following her high profile return last year. According to The Sun, Emma has quit after producers decided to drastically reduce the number of cast members and the number of episodes. When Emma returned to the series in November 2023, Hollyoaks aired five nights a week, but now there will be just three 20 minute episodes per week and a reduced cast and crew as 135 staff have lost their jobs.
A source told The Sun: “It just wasn’t working out for Emma. She agreed a long-term return with certain expectations but that all changed. She’s a professional through and through but the changes were too much so she decided to walk away.” “There’s a worry other high profile cast members may see this as an opportunity to leave the show,” an insider said.
“While they’re all very supportive of the soap, the reduced budget and seeing friends and colleagues leave after so many years takes its toll. If more go willingly then it may be that the writing is very much on the wall for the show. It will be hard to recover from further blows.” One of the other high profile recent exits from the series is Stephanie Waring, who played Cindy on the soap for almost three decades before she was dismissed as part of the cull of 20 cast members.
